Quote:
Novelist Anne Rice says she's leaving Christianity

NEW YORK – Anne Rice has had a religious conversion: She's no longer a Christian.

The 68-year-old author wrote Wednesday on her Facebook page that she refuses to be "anti-gay ... anti-feminist," and "anti-artificial birth birth control."

She adds that "In the name of ... Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen."

Her publisher, Alfred A. Knopf, confirmed Thursday that the posting was by Rice.

Rice is best known for "Interview With a Vampire" and other gothic novels. Raised as a Catholic, she had rejected the church early in her life, but renewed her faith in recent years and in 2008 released the memoir "Called Out of Darkness: A Spiritual Confession."

What a weird woman, she was making millions with her vampire books then all of a sudden she converts to christianity and then starts writing religious books and now all of a sudden she leaves it again. I wonder what her reasons are?

Took a look at her Facebook page.

Posted one hour ago:

My faith in Christ is central to my life.

She did, however, go on to say some stuff like this:
Quote:
But following Christ does not mean following His followers. Christ is infinitely more important than Christianity and always will be, no matter what Christianity is, has been, or might become.

So I guess maybe she didn't lose her faith after all. Sounds like she may be involved in a spiritual struggle, though.

I don't get it- she is saying christ is more important than christianity? WTF? Isn't that the same thing?

No! Poeple have been mis-quoting the Bible for gererations and unfortunatly much of those teachings have become mainstream.

For example, there were female judges in the Old Testament and female "church" leaders in the New, but to hear people preach today, we're to keep our mouths shut and couldn't possibly be a pastor. It's crap and it's because people don't look into who and why Paul said what he did. It's all that literal English translating stuff people do. The Bible should be read and understood from the time it was written, not 2010.

^^^ THIS!!

But, I also agree that the teachings of the church and the teachings of the Bible don't line up so great. First time you read it for yourself is often when you start to lose your faith......in the church.

Seems interesting to me how they go on and on about homosexuality destroying our country by using some very questionable passages, but looking at what is happening to us right now they should have been focusing a little more on the readings about usury and greed. :-(

I think a lot of people believe in God, believe in Christ, but have seen what organized religion has done to twist the Bible into its own congregation and political control machine. One does not have to be an atheist to find the tenants and behavior of many religious groups to be ... unpalateable and unacceptable.

Some organized religion has been less than adequate, even evil. There's a saying that Satan has done some of his best work from the pulpit.

But organized religion has also done a lot of good and many people simply find Christianity onerous and inconvenient to their lifestyle and therefore dislike it.

It's like any other human endeavor.

Precisely.

Post Re: Anne Rice Stops Being christian... Again
I sent an e-mail to friends a couple of hours ago on this, and here's what I sent:

Anne Rice Quits Christianity Over 'Anti-Gay, Anti-Life' Positions

Anne Rice announced on Facebook yesterday that she's quitting Christianity as a matter of conscience.

Wrote the author:

"For those who care, and I understand if you don't: Today I quit being a Christian. I'm out. I remain committed to Christ as always but not to being 'Christian' or to being part of Christianity. It's simply impossible for me to 'belong' to this quarrelsome, hostile, disputatious, and deservedly infamous group. For ten years, I've tried. I've failed. I'm an outsider. My conscience will allow nothing else."

She followed that up with another message:

"As I said below, I quit being a Christian. I'm out. In the name of Christ, I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life. In the name of Christ, I quit Christianity and being Christian. Amen."

The quote I shared is on her facebook page, made after that statement, (as well as some others) so apparently she may have had a change of heart. Click the link in my above post and you can see her page. Both quotes are there.

Yes, this has been my experience too. I grieve for all I've read at PCF and here about what any sane person would regard as horrific experiences with "church."

As for Rice, it's not for me to judge, but she wouldn't be the first person to flirt with faith and then to reject it.

But I don't think this is what she's saying here. I think she's rejecting the notion of a particular "formed religion." And I don't think there's any doubt--did you read the "anti-Democrat" inclusion--that she remains a person whom I would regard as a "baby Christian," a noob.

Christianity, the faith [not its core essence], can only be perceived to be as noble as it's followers and ideally those who practice and participate in the journey. To follow and believe in the faith is one thing (generally suited for the masses); to practice and participate in the faith is something else.

Christ doesn't need Christianity to be Christ. But Christianity could not exist without Christ. There are many people around the world who reverently recognize and love Jesus Christ, yet they choose to practice their own faith.

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” Mahatma Gandhi
