Post Australia taking on Japan
http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/asiapcf/0 ... index.html

Quote:
Australia is asking an international court to weigh in on Japan's whale-hunting practices, officials said Tuesday.
Japanese officials say their hunts are permitted under rules prohibit commercial whaling but allow whaling for scientific reasons.
But Australian officials said they've filed a lawsuit with the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, to stop Japan from exploiting the research loophole.
"We believe that it's possible to do all the research that you need to do and understand everything that you need to ... and you don't have to kill them to do it," Australian Environment Minister Peter Garrett told CNN Tuesday.

Its about effing time. There is NO reasonable reason why taking 1000 whales per year is justified under "research"...and from one country. Why is it Japan has such a deep interest in Whale research? It doesn't..its harvesting these whales, and to continue to do so will drive them to extinction.

Just a quick question: Is Japan's whaling industry nationalized?

Hope they succeed. There is no valid reason to continue the hunt of whales (mainly driven by oil not meat, was the first source of fuel prior to the discovery of petroleum). I see and have no problem with the occasional exception (some indian tribe or what not) but the Japanese are exploiting a loophole and the hunt has absolutely nothing to do with research.

Yes, it IS about time. The Japanese have been abusing this "research" angle for far too long. The captain from Whale Wars is a pig and an idiot, but he is right about this fraudulent use of "research". It's clearly harvasting, and you can find the meat from their "research" for sale at any Japanese market.
